About the Massachusetts Motorcyclists' Survivors Fund (Boston North)

The Massachusetts Motorcyclists’ Survivors Fund was founded in 2000 to establish Nelson’s Ride: an annual slow motorcycle ride in memory of Nelson Selig, Sr., who was killed in a motorcycle accident on May 2, 2000, leaving behind a wife (Felicia), two children (Nelson Jr. and Kristin), two sisters (Melanie and Jeannine), his mother (Faye Brophy), his step father (Bob Brophy), and many good friends.

The annual fundraiser began in August 2000, and was intended to make one of Nelson Sr.’s dreams come true: to send his children to college. That dream was accomplished and in 2003, Nelson’s widow Felicia requested that our Team begin helping other Essex County families of riders killed in accidents with the funds raised from Nelson’s Ride.

Nelly’s Bill became law in Massachusetts in 2004 as a result of the hard work of motorcyclists’ lobbying efforts. It mandates that motorcycle awareness programs be included in drivers’ education courses. The bill was named in honor of Nelson Selig, Sr.

About the Southeastern Massachusetts Motorcyclists' Survivors Fund

The Southeastern Motorcyclists’ Survivors Fund started in memory of Brian Mello, who was killed the first day of the 2007 ‘motorcycle safety and awareness’ period, when a retired driver training instructor turned left in from of three oncoming motorcycles, killing Brian and injuring his long-time friend Tommy Newhook and Wolfgang Decker, Brian’s brother-in-law.  In August that year the 1st “Brian’s Ride” was organized by Elisa Mello with a lot of help from a lot of GREAT PEOPLE stepping up.  Over the next several years after organizing as a non-profit,  charitable organization its volunteer teams hosted annual memorial “Brian’s Rides” and other events raising funds providing financial assistance to several local families of riders killed and injured in crashes.

The Fund continues associating with other Clubs, Groups and riders assisting in memorial events, raffles and promoting motorcycle safety and awareness with the Governor’s and local Mayors and Select Boards’ annual Proclamations and encouraging rider training all aimed to prevent crashes.

About Check Twice Signs

Since 1982, over 2 million bright yellow CHECK TWICE – SAVE A LIFE, MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE! bumper stickers have been placed on cars, trucks and trailers.

The phrase’s author, Bob Doiron of Moultonboro, New Hampshire, Paul W. Cote of Amesbury, Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Motorcyclists Survivor’s Funds teamed up in year 2000, to encourage new ways of reducing motorcycle accidents, injuries and fatalities.

In 2005, Bob gave Paul authorization to do “Check Twice Signs” and other “Check Twice” products, and Paul registered the “Check Twice” phase as a ‘servicemark.’  In January, 2010, Bob retired and picked Paul to transfer the “Check Twice” servicemark to Paul.

In 2013, others tried to claim ownership of the phase, registering it. Paul, with Bob and others support, challenged the claim and they gave up. They wanted to give it back to Paul, who refused telling their attorney, “you can’t give me back something that was never yours.”

In 2014, the Bob and Paul then teamed up with Charlie St. Clair and Laconia Bike Week, creating a reunion-type night during Bike Week honoring and recognizing longtime riders with a history of promoting motorcycle awareness

In July 2016, Bob passed away and was honored / remembered at Fenway Park during a “Check Twice Night at Fenway.”
